I apologize for my lengthy hiatus. Bloggy Bloggy Dew is fueled by mirth and whimsy, and there has been a noticeable absence of that lately. But to avoid regaling you with the dramarama that has been life on the farm this fair June of ’08, let’s focus on some truly exciting, if not obvious, news:
Muppet is a super star!
Yesterday, July 5th, the family decided to celebrate Independence Day in another small town, not our own: Denver City, TX. For some reason, small towns out here like to play God when observing holidays, even going as far as not holding celebrations on the actual holiday. I don’t remember how many times during my childhood when Halloween was moved because it fell on a Friday and interfered with a football game. More recent examples include this 4th of July. My town held its celebration on the 3rd—the fireworks were rained out again—and Denver City’s, well, you know. We chose the latter because it was centered on an antique car show, my dad’s current passion for life. To make a long and automotive-y story short, Two Ned’s Garage was quite successful. Both of its entries, the Beulah Mae (2nd place, 1970s Stock Car) and the 1929 Model A (1st place, 1920s-1940s Car) were well-received.
Other highlights of the day included funnel cake, corn dogs, and a staple of small town festivals…
The Cow Chip Bingo! For those of you unfamiliar with this family-friendly cornerstone of any well-planned West Texas soiree, the CCB sees a cow shit on a square, which is purchased for $5. If the bovine in question takes a liking to your square, well, you walk away with 1,000 big ones. Unfortunately, the cow passed our square by, but I digress. It’s finally time to reveal Muppet’s most recent, and arguably most glamorous, claim to fame. Ladies and Gentleman, may I now present to you….
Miss Independence 2008!!! So yes, Muppet has won her first dog pageant. We didn’t even know they were holding a puppy pageant at the festival, but as soon as I found out, I was whoring her out with a ferocity that would humble Swan Brooner’s mother. Individual prizes earned included Longest Ears, Tallest Dog, and Best Name. But those awards are trivial compared to the crowning moment when she was named Best in Show Female, or, must I write it again, Miss Independence 2008!!! The fact that her competition was a handful of sickly looking Chihuahuas and a few mutts with mange was not important. Check out this pre-show shot of owner, dog, and grandmother, the last glimpse of humility likely to be seen in that dog’s eyes.
But is that all you ask? Never! Many months ago, when I was living in Austin, Muppet’s daycare manager asked if Muppet could be photographed for their new website. At long last the site has been revealed. While much chagrined that she was not more prominently featured, I am willing to view this as a stepping stone on our way to the cover of Dog Fancy. You may see Muppet on the top left of the “Contact Us” page and in the gallery, located on the bottom left of said page. Gotta go. Muppet is requesting sliced lemon from within her trailer.
